Background of the Study:
Grassroots political awareness plays an essential role in strengthening democratic consolidation by empowering citizens to actively participate in governance processes. In Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State, initiatives aimed at enhancing political literacy and civic engagement have been critical in shaping democratic norms. Grassroots campaigns, civic education programs, and community dialogues have contributed to a more informed electorate, capable of holding leaders accountable and demanding transparency (Okeke, 2023). These efforts are vital for the consolidation of democracy, particularly in regions where historical underrepresentation and political exclusion have hindered inclusive governance. The spread of information through local media and community networks has catalyzed a growing interest in political participation, which in turn has reinforced democratic values. However, challenges such as misinformation, low literacy levels, and limited access to resources still pose significant barriers. This study examines the extent to which grassroots political awareness has contributed to democratic consolidation in Uhunmwonde, exploring the channels through which political information is disseminated and its subsequent impact on electoral participation and public accountability (Eboh, 2024). Statement of the Problem:
Despite numerous grassroots initiatives aimed at enhancing political awareness in Uhunmwonde, there remains a gap in understanding how these efforts translate into broader democratic consolidation. The challenges of misinformation and limited resource accessibility often undermine the effectiveness of civic education programs. Consequently, the extent to which increased political awareness leads to meaningful citizen participation and stronger democratic institutions is still unclear. This ambiguity hampers efforts to develop targeted strategies that bolster democratic practices at the local level, warranting a thorough investigation into the linkage between grassroots awareness and democratic consolidation (Ibrahim, 2023).
